What We Are Doing
1. Tree Planting
Since 2022, with grants of over $107,000 from the Virginia Department of Forestry, we have planted 508 free trees.
In 2022, we planted 39 trees in 10th & Page; in 2023, 137 trees in Rose Hill; in 2024, 140 trees in the Woolen Mills; in 2025, 141 trees in Fifeville and the Woolen Mills; and 50 trees in Albemarle County so far in 2026.
2. Tree Preservation
We've launched an innovative new program thanks to a three-year, $189,900 grant from the Virginia Department of Forestry. Through this initiative, we're now offering free tree care to help preserve mature trees in the Fifeville and 10th & Page neighborhoods. Since 2024 we have preserved 100 mature trees.
3. Education
We have built a number of programs to educate students about the value of trees and nature in the City, including presentations and activities for elementary school children, an environmental career fair for high school students, the Green Team and our Voices for Change Resource for future environmental leaders.
In the summer, the Green Team learns about trees, climate change and how to plant and care for trees. In the fall, they canvas neighborhoods for free trees and finally help plant the trees.
